Styling Helps for those Experiencing Postpartum Shedding

Whitney - Naptural85So you’ve rocked voluminous fros and curls all throughout your pregnancy. Your hair was in its prime and you were on top of the world because it was just healthy and bouncy and you were in love.

Now you’ve started to see bald patches, and it’s falling out at such an alarming rate that you are starting to wonder if there will be anything left. If you read the article here you would’ve probably been taking the precautions to limit the hair-fall or even to prepare yourself for what was to come. But if you’ve never even heard of postpartum shedding you are probably in a frantic state.

Breathe love, it happens to many of us. You may be having problems coming up with ways to style your hair under these conditions, so in this post we offer you some tips and some edgy ways of styling your hair while enduring postpartum shedding.

Quick tips:

  • wear low manipulation loose styles that don’t pull on your edges e.g. bantu knot-outs, braid-outs, flat twist-outs
  • take your vitamins* and lots of water
  • continue to moisturize and seal your hair
  • handle your hair as little as possible
  • treat the area with oils* that will stimulate the scalp such as emu oil*, rosemary*, castor oil*
  • some fertilizers from the Doo Gro and ORS lines can be of great help

Now that you’ve got the basics out of the way let’s look at some styles that can work wonderfully for those experiencing postpartum shedding.

Bangs and Swoops

Use the rest of your hair to compensate by creating bangs and swoops over the edges where the hair is shedding.

Loose Twists

This variety of twists put no stress on the roots as the tension on the strands are so loose that they lend themselves to a myriad of styling options while limiting the manipulation to your strands.

Accessorize

Scarves are great as hair accessories or tools since unlike hats, they allow you to cover parts of your hair and still show the style of the do. See how EbonyCPrincess uses hers here? You could also use ribbons or -my personal favorite :)- borrow a silk tie from his closet to make a bow with a headband*. A perfectly positioned rose will also do wonders.

Wig It

If you are not opposed to the idea of rocking a wig, go right ahead. Wigs* are the time tested old faithfuls for many who have experienced postpartum shedding.

Haircut

If all else fails because your patches are not confined to the edges or temple area and it would give you peace of mind that your hair looks great, get a haircut of some kind. Perhaps an undercut?

Our hair is versatile, so there are still styles that will work for you, even if you are experiencing postpartum shedding. In no time your hair will recover, in the meantime, get stylin’.
